This is hand etched on the reverse with 1850, and I do believe that was the year it was made!
This beauty was found in an estate right here in Maine, which leads me to believe that it's French in origin - Maine is the traditional home of French - Canadian Catholics, and the Sacred Heart is celebrated primarily in France! The religious practice and imagery of the Sacred Heart were popularized in France during the 17th century by Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, a nun in the town of Paray-le-Monial.
The use of mother-of-pearl adds a layer of symbolism to the sacred imagery.
Purity and divinity: The material's lustrous, iridescent surface, known as nacre, was associated with purity and the divine.
Protection: In the context of Sacred Heart devotion, wearing mother-of-pearl was believed to offer spiritual protection.
METAL: There is a twist of wire forming a bail at the top, likely copper.
