Here we have an antique, Victorian Era gemstone: This is sardonyx, a naturally deep red form of onyx that has been assigned mystical and mythical properties for hundreds of years!
Someitmes mistaken for carnelian, sardonyx is a much more opaque gem, with a deeper, more russet color. Sardonyx was the original 'mens' birthstone for the month of August!
While this stone is antique, the setting is only vintage - this was set into a Sterling Silver setting in the late 1990s.
